Character
Name: Terra
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Gender: Male
Age: Early 20s
Time Period: After defeating Xehanort by transferring his willpower to his armor.
Wing Color: One black wing and one white wing
History: A tragic hero, Terra is he
Personality: Terra’s most noticeable quirk is his belief in strength. It’s a rather simple-minded approach to problems, but he’s a strong believer in strength being the most important thing when it comes to overcoming problems or in battle. Whether he’s referring to “strength of heart” or how far he can smack his opponent with his keyblade, strength holds very high regards in Terra’s book. It’s easy to say that such beliefs would be the key elements in falling into darkness, what with power corrupts and all that, but let’s face it: Terra’s not terribly smart. Strength is a very easy concept to understand; easy enough to practically be instinctual, but even he knows better than to be strong just for the sake of being strong. It’s through gaining power that he hopes to protect his friends.
This, however, leads to Terra’s biggest flaw: the war with himself that remains constant through the entire game. Much to his dismay, his quest to become stronger has led him down the path to darkness; even in the beginning of the game, Terra barely has control over the darkness inside him. It makes itself present to everyone when he takes his exam to become a keyblade master, but because of his lack of control, he fails and is sent on a mission to hopefully gain the right to retake the exam. It’s from this point onwards when Terra begins to question how strong he really is and whether or not it’s at a level he feels is suitable. It begins his spiritual and literal quest to become stronger, a quest he was unsure whether it would lead him to the light or the dark.
It wouldn’t be correct to say that Terra is unstable because of the dichotomy of good and evil he rests upon; regardless of his own issues, he can manage an adamant and calm expression at almost any time. In fact, it’s his teetering on the middle ground that often allows him to be as steady as the earth, the element he is aligned to the closest. As such, he strongly prefers tackling problems on his own; as much as it may conflict with the bonds he has with his friends, he feels that the darkness inside him is something only he can battle, as if he alone can overcome it and enlisting the aid of others wouldn’t help.
Throughout his journey, Terra learns more about both the light and the darkness within himself, learning to truly value his friends and how having faith was just as important as having strength…but at the same time, he learned of his strong alignment with the darkness and realized how much it changed him.
Sadly, his eagerness to cling to the light makes him unexpectedly trusting towards others, including unsavory types who would otherwise take advantage of him. It’s through trusting these individuals that he ended up making his biggest mistakes, including stealing away a woman’s heart (not romantically; as in removing her heart from her body), turning away from his friends, joining the wrong side and ultimately, losing himself to the darkness. When he embraces rage and other such negative emotions, he embraces the darkness and channels it in combat. Even when he tries to justify it by defending his friends or avenging the death of his master, Eraqus, it becomes apparent to his dear friends, Aqua and Ventus, that Terra may very well be long gone, especially when they learn he raised his keyblade against Eraqus, the man he praised as a father.
Despite everything he endures and battles, even as the darkness pulls him closer, Terra values his friends more than he values becoming stronger. Aqua, Terra’s stark opposite, was the one he trained with for years and accepted as one of his closest relationships. His first meetup with Ventus led to slight tragedy when Terra’s slew of questions rendered the boy comatose; taking responsibility for this, Terra decided to look after him from that point on, forming a brotherly bond with him. As his most powerful friendships, they’re the reason Terra continues his quest to better himself: so he can always be there to protect them. Eraqus, as mentioned above, was the man Terra idolized. He raised Terra ever since he was a child, caring for him like a son and teaching him how to wield a keyblade. Terra feels he owes everything to Eraqus and wants nothing more to make him proud, which was exactly what he hoped to accomplish when he took his Mark of Mastery exam. When it came down to it, Terra’s bond towards his friends took the highest priority when Eraqus tried to solve the main problem by killing Ventus. The ensuing battle between Terra and his master broke the student’s heart, which lead to Terra unleashing the darkness within him during the final battle…a move that made him lose his body to Xehanort.
Despite this, there’s always one quality about Terra that remains constant throughout the entire game; one that makes itself known even after his body becomes possessed: his resolve. No matter what gets thrown his way, Terra makes it his mission to see things through until the end, to correct his wrongs and finish things he starts. In-game, his perseverance manifests itself into his suit of armor during the final battle, after losing his body. Even when the darkness has him in its grip, Terra continues to resist Xehanort, enough to do battle with and even defeat him. It’s not enough to free himself from control, but it’s enough to allow him to resist. Like the fabled immovable object that withstands all that try to knock it down, such is Terra’s will: forever locked in battle and holding ground until the day he can finally make things right.
Strengths:
Physical: He is a total freaking powerhouse. His physique goes unrivaled in Birth By Sleep and possibly throughout all of Kingdom Hearts. He has the highest strength and defense stats out of the three playable characters (himself, Ventus and Aqua) and can hold his own in battle very well due to his high survivability and all of the physical damage he can dish out. He’s trained for years under Master Eraqus to learn how to use a Keyblade, which is his main weapon in combat. He’s very much capable of fighting even without the keyblade, thanks to his great physical prowess.
Like Ventus and Aqua, Terra has access to abilities called command styles. They allow Terra’s attacks and abilities to become bolstered and/or changes in battle based on the attacks he uses on his enemies. His exclusive styles (Critical Impact, Rockbreaker and Dark Impulse), for example, activate when he uses physical, mine/blade based or darkness/gravity based command attacks, respectively. With Aqua, he shares the blade charge style, which is triggered with fire, blizzard or strike commands. With both Aqua and Ventus, he has access to firestorm, diamond dust and thunderbolt, triggered by fire, ice and lightning attacks, respectively. Each style changes up Terra’s attack patterns, allowing for more variety in battle. Dark Impulse remains exclusive to Terra because of being so dangerously close to darkness.
Along with command styles are another ability called D-Links, which allow Terra, Aqua and Ventus to call upon the power of their friends to aid them in battle, no matter where they are. This basically changes the user’s style to something based on the friend whose power they’re calling for, so calling on Aqua, for example, would allow Terra to utilize her wide range of magic in battle.
Shotlocks are another kind of attack that allow Terra to lock onto opponents and unleash various kinds of hell upon them. Much like command styles, Terra shares quite a few of them with Ventus and Aqua, but he has several exclusive shotlocks for him to call his own: dark volley, sonic shadow and ultima cannon. The first two allow him to utilize ranged and physical attacks aligned with darkness, but Ultima Cannon transforms his keyblade into a large cannon that can fire large blasts that can explode upon contact.
...yeah, Terra, Ventus and Aqua are really damn powerful.
Mental/Emotional: During the heat of most confrontations and problems, Terra can hold himself together very well. Very rarely does he allow his weaknesses to become apparent, so he’s a figure people can trust. Likewise, he can trust others fairly easily, going so far as to help them out with anything they may be having trouble with.
His strongest traits in this category are, of course, his fierce loyalty to his friends (particularly Ventus and Aqua) and his indomitable willpower. Even during scenarios when all may appear to be lost, Terra is never the kind of person who would back down if he believed what he was doing was right. No matter what, Terra is a man of his word, so he will see things through to the very end, no matter what he has to do to get there.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Because he’s a powerhouse, Terra has only really has one physical weakness: his speed. Compared to the others, he is slower than Aqua and much slower than Ven. It’s the price to pay for being so strong, sadly.
Mental/emotional: Sad to say, but trusting others easily is something that allows Terra to be manipulated without trouble. Though he may think he’s doing good by helping others, he won’t realize his mistake until after it’s done, leaving him to brood over his actions for quite some time.
Because he’s the big man of the group, Terra is very hesitant when it comes to letting others know about his problems. He’ll prefer to keep it bottled up, even though it’ll only hurt him. It’s made worse by the fact that Terra is constantly pulled towards the side of darkness, feeling as though he’s slowly being torn in half. Despite his eternal resolve, this isn’t a problem he’s overcome, so it’ll definitely transfer over to Luceti.
Also, it should be noted that Terra’s not really that skilled with magic. He can use it, sure, but his supreme physical abilities are offset by magical ability that’s behind Ventus’ and far behind Aqua’s. She’s the mage; not Terra.
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person: Chatting with Riku after his canon update
I WILL DO QUESTIONS IF THIS THREAD DOESN’T PROVE ADEQUATE.
Third Person:
All of this felt far too surreal for Terra to believe. Last he remembered, he lost the battle against Xehanort, lost his body to Xehanort and lost his heart to darkness…and yet, here he was: breathing, walking, living in his own body. Whatever caused him to somehow shift from being Xehanort’s shiny new shell to being his own man must’ve clearly surpassed the old man in power.
While it was great to have his body again, this instilled a new fear into Terra: what if the move to Luceti didn’t remove Xehanort from his body? What if it just made him dormant, as though Terra was made the dominant spirit and Xehanort lay trapped inside? This meant that Xehanort could resurface at anytime, and if he did, Terra might once again lose himself to the darkness. It’s not as if he wasn’t already along its boundaries, but he definitely didn’t need it to get worse than it already was.
But of course, he couldn’t be certain if Xehanort really was there. Perhaps it was just the darkness that rested in his heart since before he even took his Mark of Mastery exam? It could’ve been both for all he knew…a thought he had to shake the thought out of his head every time it reappeared. He knew it was something he had to think about, but he simply didn’t want to. He would have to some day, but now, when he was still getting adjusted to not only life in Luceti, but being back in his own body? It was a lot to think about.
Thankfully, the saving graces of this place came in the forms of Ven and Aqua. They were brought here through the same methods that brought Terra; it remained unclear to all three of them, meaning they would have to investigate it while dealing with the ever-present threat of the Malnosso. It would be rough, but this was Terra’s second chance to make things right. Even if he couldn’t suppress the darkness inside him, he would fight every threat that made itself present in the village. He lost his friends once; he wasn’t about to lose them again.
